Irma's story

Who is Irma?

Irma Bejdic is a member of AIESEC's Member Committee in Bosnia and Herzegovinia. She's 23 years old, and she's originally from Sarajevo. You can see pictures of her at the conference in Kenya prior to the accident in the gallery, below.

What happened?

In August 2011, after AIESEC's International Congress, Irma joined a group of many other young AIESEC leaders taking a bus to the beach for a much-deserved rest.

The bus was in an accident, and the President of AIESEC in Bolivia, Elmer Pérez Requiz, passed away. Irma lost her right arm and sustained severe head injuries. After her condition was stabilised, Irma was evacuated to a hospital in Munich. Since then, she has undergone several surgeries. To lower costs, she stays with relatives in Munich between visits to the hospital.

How is she now?

For the past year, Irma has met the challenges she faced with strength and courage. In a recent Skype with the members of AIESEC in Bosnia and Herzegovinia, she expressed her determination to take an AIESEC internship once she can fly again. Her spirit is strong.

However, she still needs several more phases of treatment. Thanks to your donations so far, she was able to travel to a hospital in Vienna for a surgery on her right arm. She is now back in Munich awaiting the first facial reconstruction surgery. Because the doctors in Vienna will not operate on a patient without funds, no further progress can be made for her arm until the funds are raised.

Can you tell me more details of her treatment?

Irma needs 150,000 Euros for the next phases of her treatment, which include facial reconstruction and a bionic arm that is mind controlled.
